Fed Boss Steps Down

Michael Barr, the Fed’s vice-chair for supervision, will step down as the most senior regulator responsible for supervising banks in the US. He has decided to avoid a spat with President-Elect Trump. He will however remain as a governor until his term ends in 2032 meaning Trump will need to choose from existing governors for Barr’s successor. Trump will be looking for someone who believes in relaxing rules. Barr has faced criticism for trying to finalise Basel 3’s capital rules and introducing new stress test arrangements. Michelle Bowman is in the driving seat.

FCA Failed to Comply with FOI

An internal review has concluded that the Financial Conduct Authority failed to comply with the Freedom of Information Act. In 18 cases examined in 2020, in all but one case the regulator delayed responding to the request. The FCA inappropriately used an exemption to delay the response beyond 20 days whilst it worked out how to block a request. Time for regime change?
