Making Shift Happen – The NAIL-IT Way

The challenge any business has is that the little details that matter to one person may not be the little details that matter to the rest of your team or workforce.

Yesterday I focused on the importance of getting the little details in a business right. Failure to do so can lead to catastrophic failure or, more commonly, the slow erosion of a successful business to a position of irrelevance.

In managing the cultural transformation of your business, it is important to take steps to build a heart-brain connection in your workforce between what matters to you and what matters to them.

Achieving this is not straightforward – if it was all businesses would be functioning optimally – the world would be a boring place!

NAIL-IT uses the best that behavioural science has to offer combined with extensive real world business experience to help organisations achieve this change – in other words, we Make Shift Happen.

We do this by applying a 38 component model but for the purposes of today I will confine myself to explaining a little more about the acronym, NAIL-IT.

Let’s start with the “N’. This letter asks us to differentiate between a team’s Wants and their true Needs. In the Mercedes F1 of old, clearly the team did not believe that little details in the reception area mattered – in other words, they were not needed. Toto Wolff clearly had different ideas. We use a series of team sharing sessions to establish a common set of team Needs that everybody signs up to emotionally.

The “A” refers to Attitude. For a team to be successful it needs to have the right attitude for the task in hand. By right attitude we do not meet positive attitude at all points in time. This element of the model requires us to explore what the appropriate attitudes are given the types of business challenges faced. We then move on to explain how collaborative working can create a support structure when the going gets tough.

The first “I” represents Integrity. Sustainable performance is only achieved when team members are true to their own values and beliefs. A common understanding of each person’s values and beliefs in relation to the challenges faced by the team and forging common ground is a prerequisite for optimal achievement.

The “L” stands for Limitless. Greatness in any business is achieved when limiting beliefs and constraints are tackled head on.

The second “I” stands for Intuition. We are currently living in a very data led world and slowly paying less attention to our emotions and gut feel. Our intuition is a data orientated emotional control system that dates back to the era when man and woman was trying to avoid being eaten alive by dinosaurs. Dinosaurs may not be around but other just as severe dangers lurk. Our team is skilled in helping teams develop their own version of an intuitive alert system.

Finally, the “T’ represents Tangibility. In other words, the team needs to understand what the business is striving for in terms that are meaningful to each member.

We would love the opportunity to support your team in optimising its potential – whether this means achieving the best return on investment, improving productivity or just avoiding disaster.
