The Longest Journey In Banking
My travels this year have led me to the conclusion that the longest and most difficult journey in banking is about 10 inches!
That is the average length between a banker’s logical brain and their heart.
It is a journey that is core to the banking industry’s attempts at building a sustainable culture that will ensure that all of our stakeholders are treated appropriately – a challenge that many banks continue to fail.
This year has seen Risk Audit engage in plenty of regulatory training, lots of product tuition as well as many courses focused on how to conduct the perfect audit review. But the activity that gets really makes a difference to may sense of being and makes me feel that I may be making a difference revolves around culture and seeking to make the link between a human being’s work and their raison d’etre.
The training programmes we have run in this space are not focused on the logical brain but on making an emotional connection with the heart that we have all have.
These programmes have included explanations as to how the letter of credit, the interest rate swap and the currency options (when applied appropriately) have enhanced mankind’s sense of well-being and to put it bluntly, made the world a better place.
As we settle into our Christmas celebrations and our attention turns to the emotions of the season perhaps this is a time to really consider what this connection between brain and heart means for us.
